Interesting Facts & Resources

E.L. Babcock, Hampton L Story, and Jacob Gruendike came together in 1885 to purchase the land and found the town of Coronado. They had the intention of creating a resort community and with the organization of the Coronado Beach Company in 1886, that dream began moving closer. By 1888 they had built the Hotel Del Coronado which helped boost the city to become a major resort destination along with its schoolhouse, athletic, boating and baseball clubs.

Just south of the Hotel Del Coronado was Tent City, founded by John D. Spreckels in 1900 which very rapidly became one of the most popular tourist/vacation spots. As time has passes, the tents have slowly been torn down and cottages took their places by late 1940 or early 1941.

Coronado used to be connected to San Diego by Class 1 street cars and the San Diego public transit sustem in the 1910’s. The idea came from the Panama-California Exposition in 1915 and John D. Spreckels took the reins on making it all happen. The streetcars were a fixture of the city until their retirement in 1939.
